What's happening this week

Three hearts are beating now, each finding its own quick little rhythm — like three tiny hummingbirds, all fluttering slightly out of sync. Little buds are appearing too, the very first hint of arms and legs on each of them.

It's no surprise if nausea and exhaustion have hit you harder and earlier than you expected — you are quite literally growing three placentas at once. It isn't a sign something's wrong; it's a sign of just how much is going on in there.

Three little wonders this week

  • Three little hearts are fluttering away this week, each finding its own pace.
  • Tiny folds are forming where three jaws, cheeks and chins will eventually be.
  • Your body is already expanding its blood supply to keep up with three — no wonder you're tired.

The triplet twist

Morning sickness tends to arrive earlier and land harder with triplets, simply because there's more going on hormonally with three placentas working at once. If you're feeling far rougher than a friend did with one baby, that's not you being delicate — that's just the maths of three.

Something to look forward to

  • By about week 10, all the major bits and pieces will be in place for each of your three.
  • You're about 6 weeks from the scan where each baby gets measured on their own for the first time.

To Mom:

Growing three placentas is no small feat, so if you're feeling extra tired or a bit rough, know that your body is working triple-time to nourish your three little lentils. You are doing a brave and incredible job through these hazy early days.
