What's happening this week

They're rehearsing for the outside world in earnest now — practising breaths, sucks, blinks, and turning toward sound. Their grips are firm and their little reflexes are fully wound up and ready to go.

Making it here with triplets is rare and wonderful. Every week past 34 has been a lovely bonus round, and this one is the last of them.

Three little wonders this week

  • All three are rehearsing the full breathe-suck-swallow routine they'll need in their very first hour outside.
  • They're shedding the last of their creamy coating into the fluid around them — and swallowing a little of it too.
  • Their heads have likely settled into position, lined up in whatever order they'll arrive.

The triplet twist

A singleton isn't considered full term until 39 weeks, but for triplets, it's here at 37 — three placentas simply start winding down a little earlier. Going further isn't usually encouraged, and that's alright.

Something to look forward to

  • Delivery is close — most teams welcome triplets at or before this week.
  • Expect a short nursery stay to nail down feeding, even for babies born at a lovely size.

Why week 37 matters

For triplets, 37 weeks counts as full term, and most teams won't go much further, since three placentas have been working awfully hard. If you've reached this week, your babies are as ready as they'll get, and so are you.

To Mom:

Full term with triplets — what a triumph. Your body has performed an absolute masterpiece. Rest, reflect, and get ready.
